The Athlone Apartments

The Athlone Apartments is a historic landmark in Calgary’s Mission District. Built in 1940, it is named after the Earl of Athlone, Canada’s sixth Governor General. At the time of its completion, The Athlone was hailed by newspaper accounts as one of Western Canada’s most luxurious modern buildings.

Architectural Highlights

The Athlone Apartments impressed 1940s residents with its state-of-the-art construction and modern conveniences. Features such as the expansive lawn and unique architecture made it one of the most impressive apartment buildings in the Mission District.

The Athlone is regarded as Calgary’s foremost example of an Art Moderne apartment building and exhibits some of the finest characteristics of this rare architectural style. This three-story walk-up features sleek, clean lines and decorative concrete detailing. The glass block surrounding the entrance is typical of the Art Moderne style, and contrasts nicely with the herringbone-patterned detailing of the brickwork.

Heritage Recognition

Evaluated by the Calgary Heritage Authority in 2009, The Athlone was subsequently added to the City’s Inventory of Evaluated Historic Resources. It was awarded a plaque by the Cliff Bungalow-Mission Community Association in recognition of its historical importance. The Athlone is featured on the Calgary Historical Walking Tour.
